In Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century,

the Institute of Medicine outlines 6 aims to improve the functionality of our health
care system. Our health care must be safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable,
and patient-centered. Although we live in a time where advances in our health care
technology have improved longevity, we are also plagued by problems related to safety,
restrictive and burdensome regulation, and a health care payment system that is only
beginning to reward quality and performance.
