As policy “wonks” interested in the changing fabric of payment and regulatory policies
across nephrology, we are delighted to share this policy-focused issue of Advances
in Chronic Kidney Disease (ACKD). In 2019, the Advancing American Kidney Health Initiative
(AAKHI) was signed, which was an Executive Order of directives to the federal government
aimed at (1) preventing or delaying progression to kidney failure, (2) increasing
the use of alternative therapies for end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) other than in-center
hemodialysis, and (3) increasing the transplantation rate.
